The beauty of the mt 4 platform is not only in its speed and practical features for online forex trading. The mt4 platform can function in almost any device you can imagine: desktop, laptop, cellphone , tablet, MS Windows, Mac OS, and even Linux which was a true mission many years ago.
As I mentioned in the previous post, perhaps there are some traders who still need to view a desktop application. I never believed Ipads and Android tablets would be a clear replacement for our desktop computers. It’s not fair to compare the two, they both have their great, and not so great features. It would be like comparing a screwdriver to a wrench. At certain times and situations, one will have it’s advantages over the other. So whatever that time may be, just go with what works best. Use the tool, and appreciate and enjoy the technology.
This is my Asus Transformer docked to my keyboard. I have my Linux Ubuntu running the mt4 platform and well as my THinkorSwim options trading application. I’ll be brutally honest. On my Android, my brokers Mt4 platform App and ThinkorSwim software sucks. For me it’s not practical. I don’t enjoy monitoring my activity, and certainly don’t enjoy trading and putting any positions on. The charting is so pure and crude.
Here I can take a quick peek at my Meta 4 charts that are running the custom indicators. If I had an mt4 expert advisor I’d be able to see it. The charting at Thinkorswim is wonderful, and for monitoring options positions, it’s absolutely essential for me .
Some other very nice features that some may overlook but that I find important are:
- Using the SSH server, we’re able to use the Connectbot app with Android to establish a secure SSH connection. If we use a browser such as Firefox on Android, we can use connectbot then fire up Firefox with proxy settings. After the SSH session is authenticated, you’re able to browse with firefox and all data is encrypted. I can be confident on public wifi if I make a connection to do any online banking that i’m working with a secure connection even over public Wifi.
- The other significant thing about this type of connection is that if you’re behind a firewall, say you’re at work, or on a public wifi like the library or Mcdonalds, by using this proxy method, usually you won’t be blocked from the restrictions of the firewall. You will tunnel through the wall with SSH server.
- If you look up your IP address on the public Wifi(say using whatsmyip.com) what will show is not the IP of the server and Wifi you’re using, but the IP of the proxy server you’re connected to. In my case that would be the server or router in my home office.
- The connection is pretty seamless, you won’t notice much slowdown. So say I’m at Mcdonalds stuffing my face with a Big Mac. I can turn on my Asus tab, wake up my proxy server at home, establish the SSH conection, then turn on remote desktop using VNC server/Android VNC client app. What I have, I can see my desktop , just like the video. All data that passes is encrypted. I don’t even know if Mcdonalds would know where or what I’m doing. They just see a garbled data stream.and that I’m using Connectbot.
- If you buy a quality router, you can install firmware that has a proxy server. Opensource firmware such as DD-WRT includes many powerful features like proxy server.
- Keep in mind though that when you’re connected with SSH using your Androids Connectbot App, Not all the data on your Android apps will be encrypted. Only Firefox and your remote desktop app such as VNC viewer. You must specifically set an app with proxy server settings via connectbot to keep the data being transferred encrypted, otherwise it’s just regular unsecured regular packets of data.
